majoritarianism is A belief that the majority community should be able to rule a country in whichever way it wants, by disregarding the wishes and needs of the minority.

When Sri Lanka emerged as an independent country in 1948, the leaders of Sinhala community tried to dominate over the government by virtue of their majority.

In order to establish their supremacy they took some "majoritarian measures " which were as follows :-

1 In 1956, an Act was passed which declared Sinhala as the only official language, thus disregarding Tamil.

2 Preferences were given to Sinhala applicants for university positions and government jobs.

3 A new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and promote Buddhism.
