Majoritarianism is a traditional political philosophy or agenda that asserts that a majority of the population is entitled to a certain degree of primacy in society, and has the right to make decisions that affect the society.

i) The governments followed preferential policies that favoured the Sinhala applicants for university positions and government jobs.

ii) A new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism.

iii) Denial of citizenship to estate Tamils.

Majoritarianism:-

A belief that the majority community should be able to rule a country in whichever way it wants, by disregarding the wishes and needs of the minority.

Steps taken by Sri Lanka to Follow Majoritarianism :-

  • In 1956, an Act was passed under which English was replaced as the country's official language not by the Sinhala and Tamil but by the Sinhala only.

  • The governments followed preferential policies that favoured the Sinhala applicants for university positions and government jobs.

  • A new constitution stipulated that the state shall protect and foster Buddhism.

  • Denial of citizenship to estate Tamils.
