Answer:

Majoritarianism is a term which is used for Rule by the Majority Group. In Sri Lanka, Sinhalese were present in majority and that is why they ruled Sri Lanka and gave all the additional and miscellaneous benefits to people belonging to their group i.e. Sinhalese. This gave the rise to Majoritarianism in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka became independent in the year 1948. They got their independence because of their majority. A community which spoke Sinhala was in majority, and the Tamils were in minority.  the leaders of the Sinhala-speaking community sought to secure their dominance over government. They established their supremacy by an election. That democratically elected government adopted a series of Majoritarian measures.

These are the measures:

1. In 1956 an act was passed where they rejected Tamil, and recognized Sinhala as the official language.

2. All the government jobs will be in favour of Sinhala applicants.

3. They started a new constituency where they will spread the great thoughts of Buddhist and also will protect Buddhism.

The majoritarian concept had increased the strong feelings of alienation among Sri Lankan Tamils because of the series of majoritarian measures adopted by the democratically elected government in Sri Lanka.Relations between Tamils and Sinhalese became strained. This eventually led to a civil war.
