Man’s ethical obligations towards the planet earth
Man’s obligations to the planet earth are many. Planet earth like a loving mother nurtures him, providing unstintingly for each and every need of his. He plays on its green bosom; consumes myriads of foods and drinks concocted lovingly by the caring planet. However, man is a thankless offspring of the loving planet mother. Owing to his avarice and parochial understanding, the mother planet’s condition is worse than a critical patient suffering from many maladies, on the verge of passing away.
Gone are the days when lambs and kids used to frisk and frolic down the verdant valleys. Gone are the days when the brooks and streams flowed down the slopes merrily! Where are the green meadows, pastures and terraced fields? Where is the pure blue sky with cotton-like cirrus flitting merrily high above?
The canker of industrialization and urbanization have converted the once heaven
like planet into hell. Its sylvan beauty has been replaced by factories and
mills. The skyline that once was dominated by tall pines is an ugly sight of
stacks spewing toxic fumes! The clear rills and brooks that were picnic spots
have been converted into drainage channels, carrying effluents to the river,
which has become a bigger channel carrying the muck to the sea! The entire
world is losing its beauty and purity. The condition of our planet is has
already started to look like an ailing patient. Global warming has already
started affecting the entire world. Climatic changes are noticeable everywhere.
Ice is melting worldwide, especially at the Earth’s poles. This includes
mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West Antarctica and Greenland, and
Arctic sea ice.
Man must change his attitude of apathy into attitude of empathy. He must take care of the source that gives him life every moment. The need of the hour is conserving and preserving the environmental beauty and purity of the entire planet. This task is quite Herculean. The only solution to the critical environmental issues is people’s mass participation in saving the environment. Mass forestation drive, and stopping the use of fossil fuels altogether can solve this problem.
Large scale consumption of the fossil fuels must be replaced by other alternative fuels available. The government must act strictly. There should be a ban on fossil fuels. The government must create forest belts near every city or town. Toxic emissions of industries must be strictly regularized. Installation of toxic smoke and effluents treatment plants must be mandatory at every industrial unit. With these measures strictly and immediately implemented the environmental health of the planet will improve considerably.
Explanation:
According to the narrator, man's ethical obligation towards the earth is "being a good steward of the planet and responsible trustees of the legacy to future generations". In other words, we should be responsible owners and safeguard the earth for our future generation's sake.
