Statues and structures made up of marble and limestone are slowly corroded as the rain water containing the acids (acid rain) fall on them. Both sulphuric acid and nitric acid dissolve marble to form salts.acid rain corrodes the marble of the monument. this phenomenon is also known as marble cancer.

Marble cancer refers to corrosion of buildings, monuments and statues made up of marble ( calcium carbonate) by action of Acids like H2SO4 and HNO3 .
0xides of suplhur and nitrogen released from pollution gets deposited on these above mentioned objects and when they absorbs Moisture from atmosphere gets converted into respective acids. These acids react with calcium carbonate to form salts .
This may lead to damage to property like changing colour .
Taj Mahal is loosing its colour because of marble cancer.
( sometimes acid rain may also cause marble cancer)
