The Markovnikov's Rule predicts the regiochemistry of HX addition to unsymmetrically substituted alkenes. According to it the halide component of HX bonds preferentially at the more highly substituted carbon. While hydrogen prefers the carbon that already contains more hydrogens.

The Markovnikov rule states that in an addition reaction of a protic acid HX to an alkyne or alkene, the hydrogen atom of HX bonds with the carbon atom which has the greatest number of hydrogen atoms in the starting alkyne or alkene.
