What is master detail relationship and look up relationship in salesforce what is the difference

The problem I see is building joined reports can be tricky when having Master - Detail relationships and not Lookups.

That's why I would appreciate your tips before I migrate all my changes from the Sandbox to Production. Should I still use Master-Detail instead Lookup? or should I change all my Master Detail relationships into Lookups?.
