No one knows everything about mathematics. It is simply impossible.

There are various branches of mathematics that are helpful to learn Machine Learning. The basics of calculus, algebra, linear algebra are going to be important. Then, statistics and probability theory should be studied deeper than that.

If you only learn very specific items (for example, just learning matrix multiplication but not understanding various matrix factorization methods, etc) is going to limit how well you can use various tools.

The most important problem, however, is that you need to understand things deeply to know when to use what tool or framework. Sure, you could try all the different frameworks with all kinds of different settings. Most of them will not work well, and if you understand the basics, you would have been able to predict that without having to spend days or weeks of computing time.

There is no shortcut to being a researcher. Researchers need to research. Study, read, think, experiment, fill whiteboard after whiteboard and whole notepads of scrap paper. Blood, sweat and tears.

Trust me. It’s worth it.
