Metallurgy :

  • Extraction of metals from thier ores obtained in nature is known as metallurgy.
  • The elements or compounds of the metals which occur in nature in the earth crust are called minerals.
  • The minerals from which the metals are extracted without economical loss are called ores.

Extraction of metals from thier ores :

It involves in three stages.

  1. Concentration or dressing of ore
  2. Extraction of crude metal
  3. Refining or purification of metal

1. Concentration of ore :

  • It is also known as dressing /enrichment of ore.
  • It means getting rid of as much of the unwanted rocky material as possible from the ore.
  • This impurities like sand and clay are called gangue.
  • This can be done by different methods like hand picking, washing, forth flotation and magnetic separation.

2. Extraction of crude metal :

  • Extraction of metal from its ores depends on the reactivity of the metal.
  • Highly reactive metals like K, Na, Ca, Mg, etc. can be extracted by electrolysis of their aqueous solution.
  • Medium reactive metals like Zn, Cu, Fe, etc. can be extracted by few methods like roasting and calcination.
  • Least reactive metals like Hg and Ag are often found in free State.

3. Purification of metal :

  • The process of obtaining the pure metal from the impure metal is called refining of the metal.
  • It involves several types of processes like distillation, poling, liquation, electrolytic refining, etc.
