The substance which have shape, size and texture is called matter. It has both mass and volume.

Air, gases, clouds, plants, animals, food we eat, stones, even a small drop of water or a particle of sand is called *Matter.*

The various forms of matters have some common characteristics. They are as follows :-

• *Matter has mass* :- If we take two pieces of bricks of different size, we will find that one light while the other is is heavy. The small size brick is light because contains less matter, while big size brick is heavier because it contains more matter.Hence, the amount of matter present in anything is called as its *Mass.*

• *Matter occupies space* :- You must have experienced this phenomenon during your day to day life. If one stool is placed in the corner of ur drawing room, you know that another stool cannot be placed in that same corner. If the space on your bookshelf is completely filled with ur books, you cannot keep more books on it.

• *Matter is affected by gravity* :- If anything is thrown upwards with a certain force, it will automatically fall to the ground, after reaching a certain height because of force of attraction exerted by the earth. This attraction is called gravity.

• *Matter cannot be destroyed* :- In all physical and chemical changes, total mass of the matter before and after the change remains the same.

Characteristic of particles of matter

1. Particles of matter have space between them.

2. Particles of matter are continuously moving.

3. Particles of matter attract each other.

State of matter

There are 5 states of matter are present.

1. Solid

2. Liquid

3. Gases

4. Plasma

5. Bose Einstein condenstate.
