Matter can be anything that has the ability to occupy a physical space. A matter must possess inertia, mass and size according the modern physics.

It the way, the most familiar examples for matter is protons, electron and neutrons which forms atoms which have many kinds, many compositions and uniqueness.  

Matter should has the ability to exist in various states or phases (solid, liquid and gas) according to modern physics.
