Matter is anything which occupies space and has mass in it.

Matter is made up of particles.

Properties of Particles of matter are:-

  • The particles of matter are very, very small.
  • The particles of matter have spaces between them.
  • The particles of matter are constantly moving.
  • The particles of matter attract each other.

On the basis of physical property, Matter is classified as:-

  • Solid
  • Liquid
  • Gas

Properties of Solids are as follows:-

  • Solids have fixed shape and a fixed volume.
  • Solids cannot be compressed much.
  • Solids have high densities. They are heavy.
  • Solids do not fill their container completely.
  • Solids do not flow.

Properties of Liquids are as follows:-

  • Liquids have fixed volume but they have no fixed shape. They take the shape of the vessel in which they are kept.
  • Like solieds, liquids cannot be compressed much.
  • Liquids have moderate to high densities. They are usually less dense than solids.
  • Liquids do not fill their container completely.
  • Liquids generally flow easily.

Properties of Gases are as follows:-

  • Gases have neither fixed shape nor a fixed volume. Gases aquire the shape and volume of the vessels in which they are kept.
  • Gases can be compressed easily.
  • Gases have very low densities. They are very light.
  • Gases fill their container completely.
  • Gases flow easily.

On the basis of Chemical properties, Matter is classified into:-

  • Elements
  • Compounds
  • Mixtures

Element:- An element is a su stance which cannot be split up into two or more simpler substances by the usual chemical methods of applying heat, light or electric energy.

On the basis of their properties, all the elements can be divided into three groups:-

  1. Metals
  2. Non-Metals
  3. Metalloids

Properties of metals:-

  • Metals are malleable
  • Metals are ductile
  • Metals are good conductors of electricity
  • Metals are lustrous
  • Metals are generally hard

Properties of non-metals:-

  • Non-Metals are brittle
  • Non-metals are not ductile
  • Non-metals are bad conductors of electricity
  • Non-metals are non-lustrous
  • Non-metals are generally soft.

Metalloids are the substance which share the properties of both metals and non-metals. Metalloids are also sometimes called semi-metals. Eg.:- Boron, Silicon, Germanium.

Mixtures:- A mixture is a substance which consists of two or more elements or compounds not chemically combined together.

Mixtures are of two types:-

  • Homogeneous Mixture
  • Heterogeneous Mixture

Homogeneos mixture:- Those mixtures in which substances are completely mixed together and are indistinguishable from one another are called homogeneous mixtures.

Heterogeneous mixture:- Those mixtures in which the substances remain separate and one substance is spread through other substance as small particles, droplets or bubbles are called heterogeneous mixtures.

Compound:- A compund is a substance made up of two or more elemengs chemically combined in a fixed proportion by mass. For example, water \sf{(H_2O)} is a compound made up of two elements, hydrogen and oxygen, chemically combined in a fixed proportion of 1:8 by mass.
