The apex of the heart is likewise its tip, but it is formed by the left ventricle, so it is essentially the most inferior portion of the heart

Apex beat =PMI aka point of maximum impulse. It is the furthermost point outward and downward where the cardiac impulse could be felt.

Our heart rotates and moves forward and strike against the chest wall during the systole .This strike is apex beat.

Normal apex beat ime furtherest outward and downward impulse is at 5 th intercoastal space in a normal beating heart.

As per as the function is concerened; it provides important diagnostic clues i.e.

Mitral stenosis : has a tapping apex beat at the same position as in normal heart but tapping

any disease that causes ventricles to dilate will cause hyperdynamic apex beat that is a forceful beat that is not sustained .i.e. on palpation ; tocuhes and goes.

while any disease that gets ventricles to get hypertrophied will have a displaced apex beat that has a sustained feel i.e . on auscultation =it hits stays and then leaves.
