Doctrine of Lapse :-
It was a policy introduced by English Governor General Lord Dalhousie which stated that if a king dies without a male heir to his kingdom ( means if a king dies and has no son of his own blood ) his kingdom will automatically belong to the British Empire no matter what the circumstance maybe . Adopted Sons are not considered here as the king , only the real sons of the king would be considered . Many Kingdoms such as Jhansi , Satara , Oudh , Udaipur were annexed under this policy .
