Definition of index contour. A contour line shown on a map in a distinctive manner for ease of identification, being printed more heavily than other contour lines and generally labeled with a value (such as figure of elevation) along its course.

Maps are flat unlike some of the ground which they represent so we use contour lines on a map to show how high the ground is. These contour lines are an important way of showing the rise and fall of the land on a map. Contour lines show all the places that are the same height above sea level.
