an indicator is a substance that identifies that a substance is acidic or basic which cannot be tasted by us . as we know acidic substances tastes sour and basic substances tastes bitter and some Chemicals such as sodium hydroxide , a colourless chemical can't be tasted so it is tested by an indicator such as phenolphthalein.
