Mangnification means Comparision of size of image with the size of object...or simply it tells that how actually a size of image is changed ( increase of decrease ) with respect to its object...

Magnification is a measurable quantity and is calculated by taking the ratio of Size of image and Size of object...

Magnification m = Size of Image / Size of Object

As we know that Mirrors or lenses formed images..The Nature of images are either Real which are formed by the intersection of Real Rays Or Virtual which are formed by the intersection of imaginary Ray ( dotted lines ) ...

We get either Real or Virtual images...

Magnification help us to find out the nature of image..This can be find out just by looking at the SIGN of Magnificaltion..

Note that If Magnification is + ve then image will be Virtual and Real image will form if magnification is -ve...

Here
m = + 0.5
size of image (h1) / size of object (h2) = 0.5
h1 / h2 = 5/10
h1 / h2 = 1/2
h1 = ( 1 / 2 ) x h2
size of image is half of size of object and as magnification is + ve ..This means the nature of image is virtual...

So magnification = + 0.5 means the size of image is half the size of object and virtual in nature...
