If you here a conversation and you have to tell it to someone else about it then the way you are going to tell it is reported speech.

Example => The man said," This is a nice jacket."...The reported speech or the indirect speech will be...The man said that it was a nice jacket.

Answer:

Reported Speech (also called Indirect Speech) is used to communicate what someone else said, but without using the exact words. A few changes are necessary and we also use reporting verbs like 'say', 'tell', 'ask', and we may use the word 'that' to introduce the reported words.

For examples:

He said "I'm coming" (direct speech)

He said he was coming (indirect speech)

She said to me, "My dad was a teacher."

She told me that her dad had been a teacher.
