Slash and burn agriculture is a widely used method of growing food in which wild or forested land is clear cut and any remaining vegetation burned. The resulting layer of ash provides the newly-cleared land with a nutrient-rich layer to help fertilize crops.

It is type of premitive subsistence farming

• where farmers clear a patch of land and produce cereals and other food crops to sustain their family.
• When the soil fertility decrease,the farmers shift and clear a fresh patch of land.

It is known by different names like jhumming in North Eastern States , Pamlou in Manipur,Dipa in Bastar District ,etc
