An ocean is a major body of saline water and thus a principal component of the hydrosphere. Oceans cover around 70 per cent of the Earth's surface area and contain 97 per cent of the planet's water.
The interconnected waterbodies of the world have been divided into five main oceanic regions -the Pacific Ocean, the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, the Southern Ocean and the Arctic Ocean.
☯Pacific Ocean
- The Pacific Ocean is the largest and the deepest ocean. It covers about 31 per cent of the Earth's total surface area.
- It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south and is bound by Asia and Australia in the west and North and South America in the east.
- It is roughly triangular in shape, with its apex at the Bering Strait and base along the Southern Ocean.
- Along the Pacific Ocean's irregular western margins, lie many seas such as the Celebes Sea, East China Sea, Sea of Japan and Yellow Sea.
- It also contains numerous islands, some of which are volcanic in origin.
☯Atlantic Ocean
- The Atlantic Ocean is the second largest and the busiest ocean. It covers about 21 per cent of the Earth's total surface area.
- It extends from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south and is bound by North and South America in the west and Europe and Africa in the east.
- It is shaped like the alphabet "5.
- A spectacular feature of this ocean is the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. It is an underwater mountain range on the ocean floor, running roughly down the centre of the ocean.
- The highly indented coastline of this ocean provides many sites for natural harbours.
- This ocean has relatively fewer islands but contains many shallow seas, e.ge the Caribbean Sea, Mediterranean Sea, Baltic Sea, Black Sea, North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico.
☯Indian Ocean
- The Indian Ocean covers 14.4 per cent of the Earth's total surface area. It is the only ocean named after a country.
- This ocean is enclosed on three sides, by the land masses of Africa in the west. Asia in the north, and Australia in the east.
- The ocean is roughly triangular in shape, with its apex being at Kanniyakumari and base along the Southern Ocean.
- The two northward extensions of this ocean are the Bay of Bengal and the Arabian Sea. This ocean is important because of its high oil reserves.
☯Southern Ocean
- This ocean surrounds the continent of Antarctica and extends to the latitude 60°S.
- It occupies about 4 per cent of the Earth's surface area.
- There are several seas adjacent to this ocean, e.g., the Scotia Sea, Amundsen Sea, Ross Sea and Weddell Sea.
- This ocean is covered with large ice sheets for most part of the year.
☯Arctic Ocean
- The Arctic Ocean covers 2.8 per cent of the Earth's total surface area. It is the world's smallest ocean.
- This ocean is enclosed by the land masses of North America, Greenland, Asia and Europe. It is located north of the Arctic Circle.
- The Arctic Ocean is connected to the Atlantic Ocean by the Greenland Sea and the Pacific Ocean by the Bering Strait.
- There are several islands and marginal seas surrounding this ocean, for example, the Baffin Bay, Beaufort Sea, Kara Sea and White Sea.
