The characteristics of the Indian federal system are:
Decentralization of power: The decentralization of power between the central government and the governments of the constituent provinces is the chief characteristics of the Federal government.
Separation of power: The three organs in the federal government namely- i) The Executive, ii) The Legislature, iii) The Judiciary are completely independent in their own sphere. None of them is the substitute of the other.
