what is meaning of axis in physics, maths and in general???? can we call axis as a center line in general??
Answers
in physics.....one of three mutually perpendicular axes of a body about which the moment of inertia is maximum or minimum.( x ,y and z - axis )
in optics......a line passing through the center of the surface of a lens or spherical mirror and through the centers of curvature of all segments of the lens or mirror.
I don't think axis is always an centre line...but in optics it is the centre line....
hope it helps....
In physics,
The definition of an axis is a real or imaginary line on which something rotates, or a straight line around which things are evenly arranged. An example of axis is an imaginary line running through the earth on which the earth rotates.
In maths,
An axis is a line with respect to which a curve or figure is drawn, measured, rotated, etc. The most common axes encountered are commonly the mutually perpendicular Cartesian axes in the plane or in space. The plural of "axis" is "axes," pronounced "ax-ees."
In general,
The definition of an axis is a real or imaginary line on which something rotates, or a straight line around which things are evenly arranged. ... An example of axis is the line running through the body from head to feet determining left and right sides.
