Rishi (Sanskrit: ऋषि, IAST: ṛṣi) is a Vedic term for an accomplished and enlightened person. Rishis have composed hymns of the Vedas. Post-Vedic tradition of Hinduism regards the rishis as "great yogis " or "sages" who after intense meditation (tapas) realized the supreme truth and eternal knowledge, which they composed into hyms.

Rishi is a word used in many Hindu scriptures. A simple translation of the word into English would mean a sage. Hindu scriptures and Hindu mythology tell about a number of rishis. They describe a rishi as an old person, with a lot of knowledge and wisdom.
