After the victory of British at Plassey and Buxar, they became the real ruler of Bengal. The military came under their control. Revenue was started to be collected directly by the officials of East India Company. A small amount of revenue was given to the nawab to run the administration. So the British had power and source of income but no responsibility .On the other hand the nawabs had responsibility but no power and stable source of income. This unique arrangement is called Dual/Double government. The people of Bengal suffered immensely under this system. The Dual system of governance ended in 1772
