What is meant by a functional group in an organic compound?

A functional group refers to an atom or a group of atoms which attach themselves to an organic compound and influence their characteristic chemical properties and reactions.

Name the functional group present in each of the following compounds:

(i) HCOOH- The functional group present is -COOH which is the functional group of carboxylic acids.

(ii) C2H5CHO - The functional group present is -CHO which is the functional group of aldehydes.

(iii) CH3COCH3 - The functional group present is X-O-Y where X is an alkyl group and Y is also an alkyl group and sometimes Y and X are same. The functional group is ether.

(iv) C2H5COOH - The functional group present is -COOH which is the functional group of carboxylic acids.
