When a p-n junction is connected across a battery in such a manner that its n-type region is connected to the positive potency of the battery and the p-type region is connected to the negative potency of the battery the p n junction is said to be in reverse biased condition and ideally there is no current flowing .

(1) In an electric circuit, the p-region is connected to the negative terminal and the n-region is connected to the positive terminal of the external voltage source,

(2) This external voltage effectively adds to the built-in potential difference across the junction. The width of the potential barrier is thus increased

(3) The negative charge carriers, i.e., electrons from the n-region as well as the positive charge carriers, i.e., holes in the p-region are forced away from the junction.

(4) As both the charge carriers move away from the junction, they do not give rise to electric current.

(5) This arrangement of a pn-junction in an electric circuit is called the reverse bias.
