Normally liquids expand on heating and contract on cooling .
Water also expands on heating and contracts on cooling.
However, when water is cooled below 4 degree celsius, it starts expanding instead of contracting.
This property of water is called anomalous behaviour of water.
Anomalous behaviour of water enable marine animals to breathe better underwater when the surface of the water body is frozen during winter.
