What is meant by apartheid policies ?
Apartheid is the name of a system of racial discrimination which was unique to South Africa. It was oppressive for the blacks. They were forbidden from living in white areas. ora were separate places in trains, buses, taxis, hotels, hospitals, schools, cinema halls. beatres, beaches, swimming pools, etc., for the blacks, who were completely segregated. The blacks could not form associations or protest against this kind of treatment. Since 1950, the black, coloured and Indians fought against apartheid and launched protest marches and strikes, which included many workers unions. Even the sensitive whites also joined African National Congress (ANC) to oppose apartheid and played a leading role in this struggle. But the racist government continued torturing and killing thousands of blacks. Nelson Mandela along with seven other leaders was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1964 for opposing apartheid. He spent 28 years in South Africa's most dreaded prison, Robben Island.
