Atomic number : It is the number of protons or electrons present in the particular element.

Atomic Mass : It is the sum of protons/electrons and neutrons present in that particular element.

For instance ,

Carbon :

There are 6 protons in carbon ( or 6 electrons , can be said ).

Atomic number = No. of protons / electrons.

So, its atomic number comes out to be 6.

Also,

there are 6 neutrons in carbon.

So,

Atomic mass = No. of protons / electrons + No. of neutrons.

Therefore , Atomic mass = 6 + 6

= 12.

Note : Number of electrons and protons in an element is always equal.
