ISOTOPE does not mean that the number of neutrons is different than the number of protons.

An ISOTOPE means versions of an element with varying numbers of neutrons. All carbon atoms have 6 protons; that is what makes it carbon. Various numbers of neutrons define the different isotopes.

Carbon-11 has 6 protons and 5 neutrons.

Carbon-12 has 6 protons and 6 neutrons.

Carbon-13 has 6 protons and 7 neutrons.

Carbon-14 has 6 protons and 8 neutrons.

Carbon-11, carbon-12, carbon-13, carbon-14, etc. are different isotopes of carbon.

BTW, a NUCLIDE is a particular combination of protons and neutrons. C-14, U-238, F-18 are all nuclides. Every different combination of neutrons and protons is a nuclide. Basically, the nucleus of every atom is a nuclide
