Atomic number of an element refer to the numbers of electrons or protons present in that elements .it is denoted by Z.

mass number refer to the total mass of elements .since the mass of electron are negligible the mass of an element is often taken as the sum of number of protons and neutrons.it is denoted by letter A.

carbon has 6proton ,6electron and 6neutron .so the atomic number is 6 as the number of proton is 6.the mass number is 12 as the sum of proton and neutron is 12.

Mass number = 6protons + 6 electrons = 12

now answer is complete....i hope this answer was helpful.....
