Under high reverse bias condition, the electric field across the depletion region increases. The high electric field which exists across the depletion region causes the pn-junction to overheat. Thus, the covalent bonds break and large number of charge carriers become available for conduction. This results in the sudden rise in the current flowing through the junction. Thus, the diode no longer behaves as a diode. This effect is called the avalanche breakdown. This occurs in lightly doped pn-junction
