Balanced chemical equation is that equation in which the mass (number of moles) of the reactants is equal to the mass (number of moles) of the products formed.

The equation which you have stated is wrong, because it is impossible to balance it.

When aluminium oxide reacts with caustic soda, we take a small amount of water so that the reaction proceeds and we can balance it.

So, the balanced equation would be:
Al₂O₃ + 2NaOH + 2H₂O ------> 2NaAlO₂ + 3H₂O
