Biology

Biology is a branch of Science which deals with the study of living organisms like humans and animals etc. As a branch of science, biology encompasses the scientific method and process. However, human interest in Biology is much older than that in experimental science like chemistry and physics. Of all branches of Science, Biology is perhaps one of the greatest interest to man. The origin of Biology can be traced back to human inquisitiveness about the things happening in nature. Today, Biology is one of the fastest growing branches of science. It is likely that in future, the knowledge provided by biology may become the key to human survival on this planet Earth or may be in future in other planet.

Need for studying Biology

It brings about an awareness of the rich diversity of life forms that in habit the planet Earth. It helps us to know and appreciate the precision and complexity of living processes.

Scope of Biology

  1. Basis for all applied aspects of biological science.
  2. Provides answers to the curiosities of the living world.
  3. Brings about improvement in the skills of observation and analysis.
  4. Knowledge on the significant contributions made by scientists.
  5. Paves way for new and useful discoveries and inventions.
  6. Knowledge on the improvement and welfare of domestic animals.
  7. Knowledge on the control of diseases that affect living beings.
  8. Awareness about environmental protection.
  9. Development of useful habits like nature club, bird watching and so on.
  10. Education with entertainment like zoo and National Park etc.
  11. Provides a wide variety of career opportunities.

Branches of Biology

Biology has two basic branches are:-

  1. Botany
  2. Zoology

Botany is the study of plants while zoology is the study of animals.

Classical Branches

These branches are largely meant for gaining knowledge in the respective areas. Following are the most common classical branches of biology.

  1. Cytology
  2. Embryology
  3. Ecology
  4. Biology
  5. Eugenics
  6. Genetics
  7. Histology
  8. Morphology
  9. Anatomy
  10. Phylogeny
  11. Paleontology
  12. Physiology
  13. Taxonomy

Interdisciplinary branches

Biology invariably uses knowledge and techniques from other branches of science to solve it's complicated life processes. Most of the recent discoveries and inventions in Biology have resulted from the joint endeavours between biology and physical sciences and even Biology and social sciences. This has resulted in the emergence of many interdisciplinary branches.

  1. Biochemistry
  2. Biophysics
  3. Biometry
  4. Bioinformatics
  5. Psychology

Applied branches

These are the branches in which the knowledge obtained from Biology is applied for the welfare of man and the animals and plants that are useful to them.

  1. Agriculture
  2. Agronomy
  3. Animal husbandry
  4. Anthropology
  5. Apiculture
  6. Biotechnology
  7. Dairy technology
  8. Entomology
  9. Fisheries
  10. Conservation Biology
  11. Food technology
  12. Horticulture
  13. Medicine
  14. Microbiology
  15. Molecular biology
  16. Pathology
  17. Poultry
  18. Sericulture
  19. Veterinary Science
