breathing is the process by which oxygen come into the lungs and carbon dioxide goes out of it.the rate of breathing increases during vigorous as more oxygen is being used up leading to more co2 being produced....this co2 has to be removed to get more o2 thus breathing rate increases

Breathing simply means one inhalation and one exhalation together.
During heavy exercise our breathing rate increases because during heavy exercise our body need more energy than usual and so as to get more energy we need to respire more so to get more energy we need more oxygen so we breathe faster.
