Cash Book is a special purpose book or subsidiary book in which all cash and bank transactions of receipts and payment are entered. In this book, All cash receipts are recorded on the debit side and all payments are recorded on the credit side.

Cash Book is a book of original entry, because all cash transactions are recorded first in cash book. and then posted from cash book to various accounts in ledger.

Cash Book is maintained in many ways, according to the need and nature of business. Following are the three types of cash books :-

i) Single Column Cash Book :―

It consists of only cash column, which records only cash transactions.

ii) Double Column Cash Book :―

It consists of Cash & bank column, which records both cash and bank transactions.

iii) Triple Column Cash Book :―

It consists of Cash, bank and Discount column, which records all cash, bank and Discount related transactions.

Other than, these there is one more Cash book that is maintained by the business firm, Sometimes, a number of small expenses are paid repetitively, If all these payments are made and recorded in the main cash book by the main cashier, he is likely to be overburdened with the work and Cash book may become very bulky.

To make the main cashier free from such overburden, one more cashier named petty cashier is appointed. He is given the work of making small and repetitive payments and records them in a separate maintained book, known as petty cash book.

iv) Petty Cash Book :―

Petty means small, therefore it records only those expenses which are related to day-to day basis. For Example :- Conveyance, Cartage, Postage, Stationary, and Advertisement expenses etc.
