Chemical basis of heredity is the cellular DNA.This molecule is the chemical signatures of traits that we have inherited from each parent.A section of DNA that provides information for one protein is called gene for that protein. Protein controls the characteristics.Humans have 23 pairs of chromosomes, each of which contains DNA. One of each chromosome is received from each parent. During meiosis (when the sex cells, or gametes, are formed), these pairs are split up, often recombining in the process. When we reproduce, the DNA in the gametes of each parent is combined. It is this crossing over and recombination which is responsible for variation.
