Chemical Equilibrium

A chemical reaction is in equilibrium when the concentrations of reactants and products are constant - their ratio does not vary.

Another way of defining equilibrium is to say that a system is in equilibrium when the forward and reverse reactions occur at equal rates.

Explanation:

Chemical equilibrium is a state when the rate of forward reaction in a chemical reaction becomes equal to the rate of backward reaction and there is no change in the concentration of reactants and products, it seems that reaction has stopped.

But it is a dynamic state not a static one.

It can be understood from the graph below that initially the concentration of product is zero but with time the cobcentration of product increases and concentration of reactant decreases, as it is getting consumed. After sometime the cobcentration does not change any further. Then it is said that the reaction has attained equilibrium.
