The Civilizing Missionof colonizers meant the spread of western culture, thoughts, education, language, science and logic in the colonies. The French felt, like many Europeans, that imperialist expansion had a noble aspect too. They thought that it was the duty of the superior races to educate and civilize the people of Asia and Africa. Due to this, French established many schools in Vietnam, in which Science, Philosophy and French were taught. But this did not prove to be a successful idea and had adverse effect, as it spread western culture at the cost of local Vietnamese culture which was often laughed at by the colonizers.
