ANSWER
__________

A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a finite verb. It makes complete sense on its own.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Types of clauses :-

1) A simple sentence that can stand on its own is called an independent clause.

Example --

Anthony is reading a book.

The girls were going to the school.

----------

2) A clause that cannot stand on its own and requires an independent clause to complete the meaning is called a subordinate clause.

Example --

I was talking to my aunt who lives in Kanpur.

Timothy called the police when he heard the noise.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Types of subordinate clauses :-

Noun clause acts as a noun in a sentence.

Example --

What I want to do is sleep.
(the noun clause is the subject of the verb)

The host told us how he started his business.
(the noun clause is the direct object of the verb)

Give it to whoever asks.
(the nound clause is the object of the preposition)

----------

Adjective clause acts as an adjective in the sentence.

Example --

I spoke to the people who attended the meeting.

----------

Adverb clause acts as an adverb in a sentence.

Example --

We will go wherever our work takes us.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Adverb clauses --

Manner - answers the question how?

Example --
She was eating as if she was in a hurry.

----------

Place - answer the question where?

Example --
Wherever there are flowers, bees will buzz.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Time - answer the question when?

Example --
After the wheat is harvested, it is threshed.

----------

Reason - answer the question why?

Example --
I didn't finish my homework because I was unwell.
(illustrates adverb clause of cause)

I saved money so that I could travel.
(illustrates adverb clause of purpose)

----------

Condition - shows a condition

Example --
If you don't hurry up, you will miss the bus.

----------

Consession - conveys the unexpected

Example --
Although we had offered to help him, he chose to do the work himself.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Relative Clauses :-

Adjective Clauses are introduced by relative pronouns such as who, which, whom, whose and that, and relative adverbs such as when, where and why. So, they are also called Relative Clauses.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Types of relative clauses :-

Defining relative clauses give important information about the nouns in the sentence. They are needed to complete the meanings of sentences.

Example --
I found the bottle that you were looking for.

----------

Non-defining relative clauses give additional information about the nouns in sentences. They are not important to complete the meanings of sentences.

Example --
The gift, which you gave me, is just what I wanted.
