lightning is occurred by the accumulation of charges in the Clouds, always the positive charge accumulate on the upper edge of the clouds and the negative charge always accumulate on the lower edges of the clouds.
we all know that air is a very poor conductor of electricity so, that,
when the charges become heavy and air cannot receive them anymore, both the negative and positive charge accumulate with each other and the ground also have the positive charge, the charge fall down on the earth causing light and sound. this is known as Electrical discharge and also lightning
