- It is the cavity lined by mesoderm.
- It is seen between body wall and gut wall.
- It separates muscles of gut and body wall.
- It helps in the accomodation of visceral organs.
- The coelomic fluid reduces friction between visceral organs.
- It acts as shock absorber.
- Accordingly there are three types -
- Coelomate
- Aceolomate
- Pseudocoelomate
- Aceolomate - There is no body cavity. The space between body wall and digestive cavity is filled with matrix. Ex - Porifera.
- Pseudocoelomate - The body cavity is lined by mesoderm and the mesoderm is in the form of scattered pouches. Ex - Aschelminthes.
- Ceolomate - The ceolom arises from mesoderm and is lined by peritoneal layer filled with ceolomic fluid. Ex - Annelida.
