Coelem -

  • It is the cavity lined by mesoderm.
  • It is seen between body wall and gut wall.
  • It separates muscles of gut and body wall.
  • It helps in the accomodation of visceral organs.
  • The coelomic fluid reduces friction between visceral organs.
  • It acts as shock absorber.
  • Accordingly there are three types -
  1. Coelomate
  2. Aceolomate
  3. Pseudocoelomate

  • Aceolomate - There is no body cavity. The space between body wall and digestive cavity is filled with matrix. Ex - Porifera.

  • Pseudocoelomate - The body cavity is lined by mesoderm and the mesoderm is in the form of scattered pouches. Ex - Aschelminthes.

  • Ceolomate - The ceolom arises from mesoderm and is lined by peritoneal layer filled with ceolomic fluid. Ex - Annelida.
