The command area is the area around the dam, where the benefits of the dam, such as irrigation water, electricity, etc., reach. Govt. runs various Command Area development programmes near by almost all big & 
small Dams.

Gross command area (or GCA) is the total area which can be economically irrigated from irrigation system without considering the limitation on the quantity of available water. It includes the area which is, otherwise, uncultivable. For example, ponds and residential areas uncultivable area of gross command area.
