A compound may be defined as a pure substance containing two or more elements combined together in a fixed proportion by weight and can be decomposed into these elements by suitable chemical methods.

Point To Know:-

  • Even the compunds are made of two elements but the property of that compound is altogether different from the constituting elements.

More To Know:-

  • There are two types of compounds, I) Inorganic Compounds and II) Organic Compounds.

  • Inorganic Compounds:- As by name we can define them as the compounds which are obtained from non-living sources such as rocks and minerals.

Examples:- Common Salt, Marble, Gypsum etc.

  • Organic Compounds:- As by name these are the compounds which are obtained from living sources mainly fromPlants and Animals.

Examples:- Carbohydrates, Proteins, Fats etc.

A Point to be noted about organic compounds:-

  • All the organic compounds have been found to contain carbon as their essential constituent i.e. carbon is the main constituent of all the organic compounds.
