covalent bond means the sharing of electrons between two atoms
ionic bonds means gaining or losing between two atoms

an ionic compound is that they are molecules that consist of charged ions. These ions have opposite (both negative and positive) charges.

covalent compounds are non-metals which are bound together, and consist of two electrons that are shared between two atoms.

The distinction between them has to do with how equally the atoms participating in the bond share their electrons.
