A double displacement reaction, also known as a double replacement reaction or metathesis reaction, is a type of reaction that occurs when the cations and anions switch between two reactants to form new products.

displacement reaction --> a reaction in which a highly reactive substance displaced another less reactive substance.

for ex... Fe + CuSO4 -----> FeSO4 + Cu

in this reaction iron ( Fe) being more reactive displaces copper and form iron sulphate.

double displacement reaction ---> it takes place when two substance reacts by the exchange of their ions.

For example ... BaCl2 + Na2SO4 ---------> BaSO4 + 2NaCl

In this reaction barium (Ba) displaces sodium (Na) as well as chlorine displaces SO4
