What is meant by dorsal side and ventral side?

Ventral means 'towards the stomach'. In humans, it's towards the front (and generally means the same thing as 'anterior'). In some other animals, such as dogs, cats and horses, it would mean towards the ground, because that's where their stomachs point.

Dorsal is the opposite, and means 'towards the back'. In humans, that's the same as 'posterior'. I remember the name and position by thinking of dorsal fins on dolphins and sharks.
