Dual Polity was happening during britishers time. They were making treaties with those Nawaabs who had been defeated by them in war. They made treaty with them with different provisions some of them are as follows…
The Nawab will be the Nominal Head. Having no power over administration and further relations with other Kings or Confederacy exempted. He was only used as a symbol because of this his subjects Never rebel against britishers.
There should be a British representative in the court of the Nawab or King or Confederacy. Who will manage the all activity related to that territory.
No One Can appointed without the consultation of British representative in court of Nawab.
Britishers can make fort without the permission of Nawab If Required.
Nawab or King or Confederacy can not make any further alliance with French and if any French is working in the court He should be removed.
British put a battalion of British EIC army and the expense and maintaining cost bear by Nawab or King or Confederacy. For the sake of that if other king will attack then this army will protect.
Nawab or King or Confederacy have to pay annual amount to British officer. If they denied british remove them and make someone else as a nominal head of the State you can see it in the case of Bengal when Nawab Sirajuddaula killed by them after the battle of Plassey 1757. Mir Qasim became the nawab and when he failed to pay them then Mir Zafar his son in law became the nawab and Mir Qasim was removed by britishers. Everyone wanted to be a nawab and britishers use this against them.
By this they were handling and controlling both the Administration and Revenue by showing Nawab or King or Confederacy as head of the respective territory.
And Nawab or King or Confederacy were acting as A Toothless Tiger. The Real Power Was Vested with British.
This was Dual Polity.
Hope This Will Help You :)
