Electrical resistivity is a fundamental property of a material that quantifies how strongly that material opposes the flow of electric current. A low resistivity indicates a material that readily allows the flow of electric current.

The SI unit of electrical resistivity isthe ohm-metre (Ω⋅m)

At a definite temperature,if the resistance of a particular conductor having length l and cross-section area A be R ,then

R \infty l; where A remains constant and

R \infty  \frac{l}{A} ; when I remains constant.

Hence,R \infty  \frac{l}{A} ;when both l and A vary.

R=\rho \frac{l}{A} ;where

\pink\rhois a constant of proportionality.

Its value depends on the nature of material of the conductor and its temperature. This constant is called specific resistance or resistivity of the conductor.

From the relation ,it is seen that of l =1 and A = 1 then R=\rho.

Hence, the resistance of a conductor having unit length and unit cross-sectional area is called specific resistance to resistivity.

CGS unit of resistivity is statohm cm and its SI unit is ohm-meter.
