Required Answer :-

Electrolysis word is derived from electricity.

Electrolysis can be defined as the breakdown, decomposition or chemical change using energy in the form of electricity.

Electricity is mainly passed through aqueous solution of any compound cto break it down into similar form or into it's constituent elements. Electrolysis can be even of any liquid.

Please note that every substance or compound can't be broken down using electricity. Different elements require different forms of energy.

  • Examples of decomposition by electricity ::

\boxed{\sf{H_2O\xrightarrow{\sf Electricity}\;\;H^++OH^-}}

\boxed{\sf{NaCl+H_2O\xrightarrow{\sf Electricity}\;\;NaOH+Cl_2+H_2}}

More to know :-

• Electroplating → One metal is used to cover on another metal as thin protective layer to protect it.

• Anode→ Negative terminal of q battery is called anode.

• Cathode→ Positive terminal of a battery is called cathode.
